Final Cut

Well here it is, my final cut. I included the shots that I mentioned on my rough cut and have tried to improve the areas in which my fellow students gave me feedback.

Enjoy my final cut!

Audience Feedback.

After watching my rough cut I invited the audience to give me feedback, suggesting any ways that I could improve the opening for my final cut.

Lydia- while she liked my varied shots, use of lighting and camera angles, Lydia felt that I could work to sync up the diegetic sounds of my opening with the corresponding breaks of silence in my soundtrack to create a smoother opening.

Mabel- she liked my opening as a whole, but felt that my original soundtrack lacked a uniqueness that made it sound quite flat and repetitive.

Mrs Bingham- as mentioned before, Mrs Bingham and myself watched the rough cut together and came up with a few improvements that could be added into the opening. That being said however, Mrs Bingham agreed with Mabel's comments that the soundtrack needed some tweaking to make it a better fit to the opening.

Rough Cut.

This is the rough cut of my thriller opening. Prior to posting this on here, myself and Mrs Bingham watched the opening and together came up with a few areas for improvement. The following will be either added/improved for the final cut:

- Establishing shot of the house, showing the character walking in. The reason for adding this shot is that we both agreed having it in there would establish the location and show the viewer the typical surroundings of the protagonist.

- More emphasis on the jumpy editing. I deliberately chose to edit certain parts of my opening differently to the rest, there is an element of quirkiness to the way the shots play out, we both feel that at present the shots are quirky but its not far enough, so I will push the editing boundaries even further.

- A close up of the inside of the wooden chest. During the rough cut, in the scene with the wooden chest, Mrs Bingham felt that the shot of the contents of the chest was quite an enigmatic shot, but that to enhance it I should consider doing a close up of the contents so that the viewer can see in greater detail what actually is inside that box. I have decided to do an over-the-shoulder shot from the protagonist's right shoulder.

Opening Soundtrack.

I created a soundtrack for my opening using the Garage Band app on the apple mac. For my soundtrack I wanted to create a piece of music that was simple but effective. After going through the various sounds available on Garage Band I settled on a set of piano notes named "emotional piano". I decided to loop the notes into a continuous track to create a piano-based track that I felt reflected the tone of emotion that I was aiming for.

Despite the piano notes achieving the emotional connection I was looking for, they didn't bring the ominous feeling that I wanted to incorporate also, so I added a sound called "pulsing sweep" to slowly fade in at two intervals at the beginning and middle of the piano track. It was a very low sound that added just the right amount of tension into the track.

To stay in line with the backstory I had envisioned for my opening, I decided to add the sound of children's laughter into the track. The sound effect added some quirkiness to the opening and also created a fear-like response when heard by the audience.

After the breaks of silence in the track I noticed that I needed to pick up the pace of the opening again, so I laid in a new track called "contemplative synth". Its sound was quite low and ominous and maintained a small feeling of fear.
